No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
